Favorite Organization Blogs
As connoisseurs of all things organization, we spend a lot of time reading organization blogs to get tips and inspiration. Here is a list of some of our favorites: iHeart Organizing – Jen does a great job with this blog, providing fun, colorful and easy ideas that anyone can do. I’m an Organizing Junkie – This blog covers the typical topics about getting more storage but she also gets into meal planning and how to save time cooking for your family. Penelope Loves Lists – Penelope describes herself as an “unapologetically organized soul” and that she truly is. This blog is great because she dives into a more personal relationship with her readers and promotes a variety of things like books, recipes, and other life tales. Simple Dimples – This blog has a great organization section A Thoughtful Place – another great blog dedicated to organization and pretty design! Happy reading, and let us know of other great blogs you enjoy!
Get the Most Out of your Drawers!
Everyone has a junk drawer – ok maybe some of us have more than one junk drawer. It’s just so easy to open the drawer, toss in a bunch of random items and close it before anyone can see! Unfortunately when it comes to finding items, an unorganized drawer is a real headache. The great thing, there is one basic tip to remember with keeping organized drawers: Divide and Conquer Drawer dividers are the best way to keep things neat and orderly. Using various sized baskets (readily available at many retail stores) help you sort items by size and use in order to maximize space and reduce hunting time. At California Closets we use acrylic dividers for both closets and pantries. In the closet, they are great for keeping socks, underwear, and stockings organized. In the pantry they make excellent snack drawers so the kids can quickly find the perfect thing to munch on. We also recommend acrylic dividers in the drawers that can help keep your piles of clothes in order so tops aren’t falling all over each other. Jewelry inserts are another great way to keep your precious accessories organized. Not only that, but it helps prevent damage and keeps your items lasting longer. What are your tips for keeping your drawers organized? We’d love to share your success!
No More Wash Day Blues for this Home!
Recently, we completed a laundry room project for a couple and their three children. The designer, Grace, shares some information about the project and some of the unique features included in the design. "This was a really fun project! Her home was under construction, so I had to deal with a 135 degree angle wall as well as working around the construction so it could be done as soon as possible. It was a challenge because we had to integrate a mud room and a laundry room in a fairly small space while incorporating a section for each family member with a bench to sit on and a place for coats and hooks to hold backpacks. We also had to have plenty of baskets for dirty laundry, a hanging bar for clothes right from the dryer, and a countertop to fold clothes on. We built a system that had four large laundry baskets over a countertop with hanging above and placed this right next to the dryer so the clothes could be easily taken out of the dryer and put on the countertop, and then hung right above the countertop. We then built an adjacent wing off the 135 degree wall that had space for four 18” sections and one additional one for extra shoes and 3 extra laundry baskets for dry cleaning, and special care laundry. We did the system in white to match her existing cabinet and to keep the fairly small space bright and open. The client was thrilled with her design, and says that her kids keep everything a lot neater now that they have their “own” space in their cubby. It's like the kids have individual lockers, but they are much classier and way more stylish." For more examples of Grace's work please visit her online portfolio.
Resolve to Succeed!
Welcome to 2013! Your new year was probably greeted with exciting cheers as you celebrated with friends and family, toasting to success and happiness in the year ahead. No doubt, someone in the party had to bring up the R-word. Yes, Resolutions – so good intended, yet often amounting to no more than an ill-conceived attempt at self improvement. But resolutions could be so much more than that! The New Year really is a wonderful time to take a step back and consider how your life is going. Take a moment to do some deep self-reflection and follow these tips to develop a resolution that will actually make a difference in your life and create a plan to make it happen! Take a moment for self reflection. Look over the last year of your life and take time to evaluate how things are going. What were some of your happiest moments, your successes? Also take note of areas where you could use improvement or things you want to change in your life. Be sure to try and identify the source of those issues. Is this something that keeps re-occurring in your life? Make a realistic goal. Based on your evaluations, what can you do to increase the successes and limit the challenges in your life? Be as specific as possible about what real changes need to be made in your life. List why you want to make those changes. This is probably one of the most important components, but it’s often overlooked. If you have strong reasons why you want to make life changes, then you are probably much more likely to go through with them and stick to them. Make small steps that will help you reach your final goal. Big changes are difficult and overwhelming. Break down a goal into smaller components so you can work every day to make small changes. Reward yourself. Be your own cheerleader! Making changes is difficult so reward yourself for your accomplishments and give yourself credit for trying. Just doing something to try and improve yourself is huge so keep up the good work and tell yourself that on a regular basis! Good luck to everyone in accomplishing all their goals for 2013!
